Aerospace & heavy engineering
Where parts are expensive and failures are critical, every inspection needs evidence. Our founder has built and deployed production vision systems in aerospace and heavy engineering, and Gorad is built around the same discipline: every decision recorded, every program signed.
What makes inspection hard here
- Critical features must be checked on every part, with proof
- Parts are large, heavy or complex, so they need several views or a robot to present them
- Audits ask who checked what, when, and with which gauge
- Heat, dust and vibration on the shop floor make stable lighting and mounting hard
Typical checks
Defects and surface damage
Visible cracks, laps and folds, casting porosity and inclusions, weld spatter, paint runs, and debris left on parts.
Presence and count
Fasteners, rivets, drilled holes, bolts and connector pins: present and counted.
Measurement
Hole diameters, edge and step positions, slot widths and chamfers in 2D; sealant bead width and gaps.
Codes and text
Laser-etched serials, Data Matrix (DPM) marks, nameplates and heat numbers, read for traceability.
Variant and orientation
Fastener head type and orientation, torque-mark alignment, and connector pin-out.
What Gorad can check here
Typical tasks and the setup each one needs. Examples, not customer stories.
Aerospace
Foreign objects on parts
Loose objects and debris left on a part or fixture before it moves on.
Area scan, dark-field or diffuse light
Fasteners and rivets
Presence, orientation and head type.
Area scan, bright-field, telecentric lens
Drilled holes
Hole presence, count and edge chipping.
Backlight or coaxial light
Sealant beads
Continuity, width and gaps along the bead.
Area scan, several views or robot positions
Part marking
Laser-etched serials, Data Matrix (DPM) codes and nameplates, read and recorded.
Macro lens, dome or ring light, OCR and code reading
Machined part gauging (2D)
Edge positions, hole diameters and slot widths against your limits.
Telecentric lens, collimated backlight
Avionics assemblies
Component presence, position and polarity on boards.
High-resolution camera, multi-angle light
Wire harnesses and connectors
Pin presence, pin-out and crimp position.
Area scan, macro optics
Heavy engineering
Casting surfaces
Cold shuts, surface porosity and sand inclusions.
Area scan, raking or dark-field light
Forging surfaces
Laps, folds and visible surface cracks.
Area scan, structured or dark-field light
Weld beads and seams
Bead presence, position and visible defects such as spatter, gaps and surface cracks.
Area scan, controlled light
Bolts and fasteners
Presence, count and torque-mark alignment.
Area scan, bright-field
Nameplates and serials
Serial and heat numbers read for traceability.
Area scan, OCR
Machined component gauging (2D)
Hole and step dimensions and chamfers.
Telecentric lens, backlight
Painted and coated surfaces
Runs, missed coverage and visible contamination.
Area scan, controlled raking light
Turbine blades and engine internals need borescope or 3D systems; composite layup and ply checks over large surfaces need dedicated gantry systems; weld depth, undercut and paint texture (orange peel) need 3D or deflectometry; hidden cracks need NDT such as magnetic particle or ultrasonic testing; full solder-joint AOI needs dedicated machines; and high-speed strip inspection (such as hot-rolled steel) needs line-scan cameras. These are outside what Gorad offers today. In heavy engineering, rugged enclosures for heat, dust and vibration, and good lighting and mounting, often matter more than the AI.
